Yes,
it happens in cyberspace too! Like physical spaces, websites
sometime run out of capacity. So we're in transition: we are
readying a
new website, while keeping this
one operative until everything is moved over and the back end of
the new website matches our needs. For directions,
previous events, etc. please use this website. To preview
the new website-in-progress,

will have the same address as this one.

Bolivian Nueva Cancion Pioneer, Manuel
Monroy
May Day, 2008, 8:00 - 10:00 p.m.
The history of Manuel "Papirri" Monroy
is one marked by the study of music, creativity, and cultural
work. While he is definitely in the category of musicians of the
"new song" movement from Latin America, his poetry and music
escape some of the conventionalism of the movement. Manuel
initiated his musical career playing classic guitar, but later
on composed his own songs and became famous at various social
song festivals. In 1980, under the dictatorship of General
Garcia Meza he was forced to go into exile in Mexico and was
able to return to Bolivia only in 1984. There is a $10 donation
to support the Boston May Day Coalition.

Five workers from Top City Produce in New York City were
recently fired from their jobs. The “Gang of Five” – Osvaldo,
Mario, Diego, Esau, and Carlos – have been some of the strongest
and most active members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)
since they joined the union almost two years ago. After one of
the workers was suspended, the other four approached the boss in
an attempt to discuss the situation. On Monday morning, the boss
told them all to wait outside and then never allowed them back
in. They continue to be locked out.
Before joining the union, Top City workers consistently
pulled 72-hour weeks with no overtime and no benefits.
Conditions improved once the shop went union. Workers filed a
lawsuit against Top City for wage violations and negotiated a
contract with the boss. They were waiting for the boss to sign
the contract when they were fired without warning on Monday.
Suggested donation for the benefit: $10
For further information, call 617-625-9070,
send an email, or

Author presentation and reception. Book description: "Since
coming to power in 1998, the Chávez government has inspired both
fierce internal debate, and horror amongst Western governments
accustomed to counting on an obeisant regime in the oil-rich
state. In this rich and resourceful study, Greg Wilpert exposes
the self-serving logic behind much middle-class opposition to
Venezuela's elected leader, and explains the real reason for
their alarm. He argues that the Chávez government has instituted
one of the world's most progressive constitutions, but warns
that it has yet to overcome the dangerous specters of the
country's past: its culture of patronage and clientelism, its
corruption, and its support for personality cults, all fuelled
by the attention and interference of a succession of US
administrations."

have spread throughout Venezuela in a unique experiment
combining direct democracy, representation and economic
development. Kendra’s graduate work in Argentina, combined with
her own activism provides a keen vantage point for understanding
