May Day, 2008, 8:00 - 10:00 p.m.  The history of Manuel "Papirri" Monroy is one marked by the study of music, creativity, and cultural work. While he is definitely in the category of musicians of the "new song" movement from Latin America, his poetry and music escape some of the conventionalism of the movement. Manuel initiated his musical career playing classic guitar, but later on composed his own songs and became famous at various social song festivals. In 1980, under the dictatorship of General Garcia Meza he was forced to go into exile in Mexico and was able to return to Bolivia only in 1984. There is a $10 donation to support the Boston May Day Coalition.

IWW Solidarity Benefit

January 19, 2008, 6:00 - 10:00 p.m.  Five workers from Top City Produce in New York City were recently fired from their jobs. The “Gang of Five” – Osvaldo, Mario, Diego, Esau, and Carlos – have been some of the strongest and most active members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) since they joined the union almost two years ago. After one of the workers was suspended, the other four approached the boss in an attempt to discuss the situation. On Monday morning, the boss told them all to wait outside and then never allowed them back in. They continue to be locked out.

Before joining the union, Top City workers consistently pulled 72-hour weeks with no overtime and no benefits. Conditions improved once the shop went union. Workers filed a lawsuit against Top City for wage violations and negotiated a contract with the boss. They were waiting for the boss to sign the contract when they were fired without warning on Monday. Suggested donation for the benefit: $10

Constitutional Reform in Venezuela

November 15 (& 27), 2007, 6:30 p.m.  Description: The Constitutional reform proposal has been presented by President Chavez, the National Assembly, and the People through consultations throughout the country. This reform will be implemented if the majority of the voters vote "YES" in the next referendum on Dec ember 2nd in Venezuela. The Bolivarian Circle of Boston is offering two workshops to discuss the changes that are being proposed. We are inviting all those that are interested in getting information on the proposed changes to the Constitution, to participate in these workshops.

Local Power: Venezuelan Communal Councils

SatuSeptember 13, 2007, 7 - 9 p.m.  Brown University Ph.D. student Kendra Fehrer has just returned from her 3rd stay in Venezuela where she spent time with 8 communal councils. Recently established, these councils offer grassroots communities of up to 400 families an opportunity to directly organize their own economic and social development. Some 18,000 communal councils have spread throughout Venezuela in a unique experiment combining direct democracy, representation and economic development. Kendra’s graduate work in Argentina, combined with her own activism provides a keen vantage point for understanding the unfolding Venezuelan experiment with 21st Century Socialism.

Strategy Session

Charting the Road Ahead for the Antiwar Movement

July 14, 2007: The Stop the Wars Coalition is organizing a strategy session on the antiwar movement. The half-day event, running from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at encuentro 5 in Chinatown, draws together
different strands of the movement over 3 90 minute sessions:

1. Existing Conditions - Reflecting on the war machine and its bases
2. What is to done? - What can we do to the stop the war?
3. The Road Ahead: Brainstorm and Discussion

The first 2 90-minute sessions feature panel presentations (lasting 30 minutes) followed by open discussion. Panelists include organizers from Mass Peace Action, Troops Out Now Coalition, Massachusetts Global Action, United for Justice with Peace, Code Pink and other local organizations. The final 90 minute session is an open ended discussion that will feature an active facilitator to keep the conversation moving forward. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
